The Programmer Analyst must meet the needs of companies with various activities. He/she may work for companies that have their own IT departments that produce software or offer IT services. The development of applications that meet the needs of small, medium and large businesses in growth is still one of the largest users of services programmer analysts. However, due to the opening of markets, the constant advent of new technologies and the increasing importance of information and communication, this area is undergoing significant changes. They are reflected in particular by increasing diversification and, consequently, a very high demand for new products. These new products include communication applications as an aid to group work (intra-company), applications that enable data exchange (inter-company) and the deployment of the Information Highway in various purposes, especially in trade. These new applications have unique characteristics: friendliness, interactivity and multimedia. The programmer analyst is expected to contribute more to the development of computer applications that incorporate these features.
The tasks performed by the programmer-analyst can::
- vary according to the company’s characteristics such as the nature of its business and its size, as most businesses are small or medium-sized, the programmer-analyst must be versatile;
- address any stage of the development cycle of an application, that is to say, the analysis and design, implementation and testing as well as the implanting and integration into a target computing environment. The production of documents and user training are also part of the duties of programmer analysts;
- maintain existing software by bringing functional improvements. He/she also acts as a specialist with the users;
- perform tasks related to the operation of computing environments such as the installation and configuration of hardware, simple management tasks on a limited scale networks and technical support tasks.
